Strawberry Creek Walk & Workshop
"Writing the Watershed into Our Lives"

Saturday, September 24, 2005 • 10 AM to Noon

Begins at Berkeley's Civic Center Park
(Martin Luther King Jr. Way & Center Street)

Join the Fish Bicycle (direct from Burning Man), Watershed poets, and environmentalists as they trace the route of Strawberry Creek as it tunnels beneath downtown Berkeley to its "daylighted" condition at the Watershed Festival site on the UC Berkeley campus.

The walk will be lead by poets Robert Hass and Chris Olander, and will be joind other featured poets, along with city planner Helen Burke, naturalist Glen Schneider and ecologist Steve Maranzana.

Participants will be introduced to the issues with daylighting Strawberry Creek through downtown Berkeley and caring for its flow through the U. C. campus. Enjoy a leisurely pace with brief stops for poetry and speeches.

"Writing the Watershed into Our Lives" Workshop

Participants may also choose to use the walk as a free, on-site poetry workshop. The walk is designed to stimulate and inspire participants to explore what is important in their lives; what they need to know to pay attention and connect with the natural world.

The poets and speakers will be lively, provocative and provide a rich source of diverse issues, images, metaphors, and information on plant and wildlife relationships. There will be a limited amount of time for questions. Those who wish to workshop their writing along the walk should bring necessary writing materials. A limited amount of paper and pencils will be provided.

Participants in the writing workshop are encouraged to submit their finished poems to Poetry Flash by September 30, 2005.

Three poems will be selected and published in the next issue of the Flash. All poems submitted will be compiled and sent to the Berkeley City Council in support of the Day Light Strawberry Creek project.

This is a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy a walk along Strawberry Creek and "Write the Watershed into Our Lives."
